Save Crosfield Nursery- South Norwood's saviour for SEN children and their families

The future of all five of Croydon’s maintained nurseries is being reviewed, with a proposal to close at least once. Crosfield Nursery, in South Norwood, is under threat.

We believe it is a scandalous abandonment of the council’s responsibilities to close down such essential provision for young children. A maintained nursery is funded and controlled by the local authority (in our case croydon council). There are around 385 maintained nurseries left in England serving 40,000 children; the rest have been privatized. Maintained nurseries are often found in the most deprived areas of england and offer access to fully funded and sliding scale spaces for children and families who need them.

Crosfield is the gem of our local community’s childcare provision in Croydon. It has been an essential space in Croydon for decades and remains at the forefront of childcare through its caring and specialist staff, expansive facilities and innovative approach. Crosfield provides essential early years support for children with special education needs that doesn't exist anywhere else in croydon. The local area around Crosfield includes a high number of children in the 20% most disadvantaged in England. All the expertise, resource and care at Crosfield are needed by these children.

Crosfield provides expert education and care for local children, The closure would force parents and young children to either travel, attend different (often less suitable places) or not access nursery at all. Private nurseries involve around £10-20 per day additional charge to the funded hours all 3 years olds are entitled to, two return journeys on public transport would be a minimum of £3.50 per day - financially excluding many families. Crosfield has very experienced, skilled and caring staff who have nurtured many children in our community understand the needs of our local community. It is an inclusive nursery.

Every nursery class at Crosfield has a qualified teacher as well as other highly trained, experienced and dedicated educators.

They provides essential early years support for children with special education needs that doesn't exist anywhere else in croydon.

Around 20-30% of pupils at crossfield are sen, and require extra support - this is far more than in private nurseries and nursery classes in school.

Many children arrive at Crosfield having been rejected from other nursery placements, or are not offered them at all due to a lack of ability to meet support needs.

Staff expertise would be lost to children in need of support and lost to develop other early years educators. The strong early years support at Crosfield is transformative for all children and life-changing for children with special needs.

Crosfield has extensive facilities and a large outdoor learning space, most other local private provisions and nurseries do not have this.
this space is essential given how many children in the local area don’t have access to home outdoor space, inclusive of families living in temporary accommodation in the area
